Meet the animals!

At our family farm in the Scottish Borders, we're proud to offer a down to earth and authentic Farm Experience Attraction that introduces visitors to a variety of animals. Whether you're looking to meet our majestic Highland Cows, our playful goats, or our clever pigs, there's something for everyone at our farm.

Let's start with our Highland Cows.

These magnificent animals are a real highlight of our Farm Experience Attraction. With their shaggy coats and impressive horns, they're a sight to behold. Did you know that Highland Cows are known for their hardiness and are well-suited to the Scottish climate? They're also great for conservation grazing, as they're able to graze in areas that other animals can't.

Next up, we have our goats.

These curious and friendly animals are always a hit with visitors. Did you know that goats are excellent climbers and can even climb trees? Here we have a mixture of breeds, each of which has its own hilarious character. Goats at the farm are very keen to greet visitors especially if you have their feed with you!

Our sheep are another popular attraction at the farm.

We have a variety of breeds, each with their own unique characteristics. Did you know that sheep have a strong sense of smell and can recognize up to 50 other sheep by their scent alone? They're also known for their wool, which is used to make clothing and textiles. However, a large proportion of the sheep here at Kersheugh are wool shedders. This means that they shed their wool naturally and don’t need to be shorn. It blows across the fields and the birds use it for making their nests too! Below you can see two of our sheep, the one on the right has already shed its wool.

Moving on to our Saler Cows

These gentle giants are a breed of cattle that's well-suited to the Scottish climate. They're known for their hardiness and their ability to graze in tough conditions. Did you know that Saler Cows are also prized for their meat, which is lean and flavorful?
We find they have a great mothering instinct which means they are protective over their newborn calves and nurse them well.

The Poultry

We have a variety of chickens and ducks on our farm. Did you know that chickens have excellent memories and are able to recognize up to 100 other chickens? They're also great at controlling pests like insects and snails. Chickens are great animals for little children. They’re fascinating to watch and are small so not intimidating to little ones.

Last but not least- the pigs.

These intelligent and social animals are a joy to be around. Did you know that pigs are highly trainable and can even learn to do tricks? They're also great at rooting and foraging, which helps keep our pastures healthy. They can be pretty smelly and horses are known to actively avoid them.

We hope that this guide to our farm animals has given you a glimpse into our farm. We invite you to come and meet our animals for yourself and to learn more about the important role that they play in our lives.
